What Does a Direct Support Professional (DSP) Actually Do?

When you first start looking into care options for a loved one with a disability or chronic condition, you'll likely come across the term Direct Support Professional (DSP).

But what does that role actually involve?

A DSP is a trained caregiver who supports people with disabilities in their daily lives—but the role is far more personal and dynamic than that title suggests. These professionals are consistent caregivers, mentors, and advocates who play an important role in a person’s daily support network.

You might also be familiar with Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), who often work in hospitals or nursing facilities. While both roles involve helping others, there are some important differences.

CNAs typically focus on medical-related tasks under the supervision of a nurse. Their work is essential in clinical settings. A DSP, on the other hand, is more focused on supporting the daily lives of individuals with developmental disabilities or chronic conditions—not just physically, but emotionally and socially, too.

For families who want care that promotes independence, builds relationships, and supports long-term personal growth, DSPs offer a more holistic, community-centered approach.

They help with everyday tasks like:

  • Bathing and dressing

  • Preparing meals

  • Administering medications

  • Transportation to appointments

But they also support independence and joy through:

  • Encouraging social activities

  • Assisting with hobbies and interests

  • Teaching life skills like cooking or budgeting

  • Offering emotional encouragement and reliable presence

At Dignified Living, we know that our DSPs are the heart of what we do. They build trust and consistency, meeting each person where they are and walking alongside them through every stage of life. A great DSP helps their clients not just survive, but thrive.
